Nigeria: The Next Business Destination for Pakistan – A Strategic Economic Outlook (2025)
Nigeria is rapidly emerging as one of the most promising business destinations for Pakistan in Africa due to its large market, resource wealth, and expanding trade ecosystem. With a population exceeding 220 million people, Nigeria is the largest economy in Africa and a strategic gateway to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) market of over 1.3 billion consumers. Nigeria’s GDP is estimated at around $477–500 billion in 2025, with projected growth of about 3–4% annually, driven by energy, agriculture, digital services, and infrastructure development.
Nigeria’s economy is diversified. Agriculture contributes roughly 24% of GDP and employs nearly half of the workforce, producing major crops such as cassava, maize, rice, sorghum, millet, and yam. Key export commodities include crude oil, liquefied natural gas, cocoa, fertilizers, cashew nuts, and sesame seeds, while major imports consist of machinery, refined petroleum products, chemicals, vehicles, and food items.
Nigeria’s total foreign trade reached approximately ₦138 trillion in 2024, with exports valued at ₦77.44 trillion and imports ₦60.59 trillion, producing a strong trade surplus. Major trading partners include China, India, the United States, Spain, France, and the Netherlands, reflecting Nigeria’s deep integration into global supply chains.
Pakistan–Nigeria bilateral trade is estimated at $300–350 million annually, with Pakistan exporting rice, pharmaceuticals, textiles, surgical instruments, and construction materials, while importing petroleum products and raw materials. Significant untapped potential exists in agriculture technology, pharmaceuticals, ICT, construction, and halal food industries.
For Pakistani entrepreneurs, Nigeria offers a high-growth consumer market, expanding urbanization, and strong demand for affordable manufactured goods. Strategic partnerships, joint ventures, and investment in value-added sectors can transform Nigeria into a key African business hub for Pakistan’s exporters and investors in the coming decade.
